The wife wanted to go to this place. I have visited other Islas Marias but never this site. I must say it was a dissapointment. First off, they had a live band playing, at noon!! So having a conversation was hard since the band kept playing and the drunk guys there were totally loving it. We had little kids so that was hard. The food was OK, nothing too great. The shrimp empanadas were too greasy and with scarce shrimp inside of them. I had the shrimp cocktail, it wasnt all that great, very little shrimp in it. Not worth the price.

Nowhere near as bad as expected after reading earlier reviews. The place is cleaner than most taquerias, but it is nowhere near as cheap. If you are stuck in this industrial area a outside Chicago, you could do a lot worse. Your meal comes with tostadas in a basket with Saltines and a ceviche-like substance to scoop up. The salsa verde has a decent amount of heat. Almost everything on the menu involves shrimp somehow, probably a nod to the region around Nayarit, Mexico. My Garlic Shrimp involved what seemed to be jarred garlic and not amazingly-fresh shrimp. But the rice and sides were amazing. The place wasn't packed, but there was a mariachi band. My service was great, despite my horrid reenactments of Spanish lesson monologues when ordering.

So far I've come here three times, and I will probably continue to return. This place is so yummy, and I've had good service so far, except for one cocky waitress. I like the ceviche, and the camarones rancheros! Watch out for that green salsa though, too spicy.

I took my daughter as a special treat,I knew it would be pricey. I was very disappointed with the dish she ordered, it was the Molcajete With muscles crab, octopus, shrimp and mini scallops. It was the very very salty.. The shrimp was not cleaned and we were not given anything to crack the legs with. The octopus taste as if it had gone bad. Visually it looked great but honestly inedible ,we did not even want it to go. My daughter said she enjoyed the ceviche better. My daughter absolutely loves seafood ..she could not eat it. We also had the Shrimp Cocktail .. It looked great ..but unfortunately very sweet We added lots of lemon cilantro chile..it still felt more like a dare to eat it,again the shrimp were large but not cleaned :( eww $16 no thank You. I spent $50 + tip, I would rather have made it myself considering I live a mile away.I will never go back again thank goodness mu son and girlfriend didn't go I would have definitely had said something Spending $100 The only think I enjoyed was the Bulls Game that was on. And to top it off I was sick to my stomach 10 mins after we left unbearable pain. I don't recommend this place!! *the waitress was good

Food was very good but the service was waaaaaay below par. Wife and I got our food right away and it was very good. My kids ordered tacos and they screw up the order 3 times!!! And after we we're finished with our meal the tacos came and we get a half ass apology. After which the server never came by and asked us if we wanted another drink and we were pretty much ignored. They seemed more interested chit chatting in the kitchen than attending to their customers. Then we waited almost 15minutes after we were done to get our check. Again no one came by And I had to chase down someone to finally pay. I thought maybe they would take the tacos off the bill or at least offers a better apology. (WRONG!) I wasn't even asked how my meal was and was charged full price. So I left a 10% tip hoping they got the message which I'm sure they'll just think I was being cheap. Anyway I'm still up in the air if ill return. Like I said I really liked the food.

Went here on a Monday night - no mariachi band so I didn't experience the loud music that other Yelpers have had issues with. The place wasn't busy and I was served promptly. My waitress was Vicki and she was pretty pleasant, so that was a plus. The fish ceviche opener is a real nice touch - though I'd prefer fresh cooked chips with it over the crunchy tostada pieces they serve. I ended up ordering shrimp empanadas for starters; $6.99. They were cooked/fried just right as they had a very light brown color, not greasy at all and were piping hot. Came with a "Thousand Island-like" sauce which suited them well. Enchiladas Coras was my entrée choice, this was pretty good and priced at $11.99. Refried beans, rice and a salad (I've never understood why so many Mexican restaurants insist on including a salad with their entrees and put the cold lettuce and veggies on a hot plate - no sense to me, but that's another soapbox). Another reviewer noted that the salsa tastes like seasoned lime juice - I'll second that opinion. It would be nice if they had better and maybe a choice of 2-3 salsas. Reasonably priced Pacifico's at $4.75 each. But overall for me, a good experience. I've been by there when it's busy and I don't think I'd enjoy the place when it's like that. But on a quiet Monday night, it's worth a shot. One thing I will say is that I know seafood isn't cheap nowadays, but this place is generally a bit on the pricey side for the kind of atmosphere there. About half of the plates and silverware you get are to-go type stuff. With entrees in the $20 - $60 range on the menu (mine was one of the least expensive), the "to-go" stuff seems a little tacky.

So we stop in on a Sunday evening. .. that was a mistake but hey, they Big Bro called and said that is where he wanted to meet to have his birthday dinner.. who am I say no? I have driven past this place countless times on North Ave. But for some reason to never stop in, but I have always noticed it's packed on the weekends. (They gotta be doing something right.) At your table when you sit they give you some salsa and small bowl of ceviche. No wait, please re-read that. Yes a bowl of fresh ceviche! I almost didn't try it because a Northlake restaurant severing fresh ceviche is so..hmmm.. Not right? But my brother, sister in law, and boyfriend were eating it, and I was not going to be left out of that party! It was really good actually. In fact, I decided to order a plate of it because the place was PACKED and serve seemed slow, so we did that as an appetizer. The plate was actually even better! As for our main course I decided on shrimp tacos, which I must say were good! I wouldn't deal with the wait though just for those, but since they have the yummy ceviche, I didn't mind. My bf had the fish tacos- which were really good! My sister in law did the shrimp in garlic sauce- AMAZING! As for the birthday boy he did the shrimp and oyster cocktail- Which was SO DELCOUS. I make this same dish at home, but here they have some of the freshest seafood around this area! Now I'm not saying its fresh like find dinning but, you are definitely getting what you paid for in my option. Helpful Tips: -Don't be alarm.. the service sucks for everyone.. they aren't singling you out. -Weekends are packed! Be prepared to be in close corners with the peeps around you. -Sunday they have a live mariachi band. So you will get to hear them.. and be in close corners, in a packed restaurant. Personally I enjoyed it, but I know some people would not prefer the loudness during their Sunday dinner. -Its located right next to the Shell Gas Station.

I'm giving them a four because of the food. The shrimp dishes are out of this world !!! Ceviche is scrumptious! Tacos Asada yum!!! But the music is ear bleeding loud. So when I get a craving it's take out! I guess this would be a great dinner place to bring people you don't want to talk too, just a thought.....

This place serves good food, but...... cleaning the floor with ammonia during business hours with someone at the table right next to you, spoils the experience. Strong smell of ammonia and food don't go well together. Really? You can't clean before opening or after closing? Completely unprofessional and unsanitary. Even worst when asked to stop cleaning, they ignore you. Also, the place is too small to have a Mariachi play full blast. Totally annoying!!! If I wanted my eardrums to burst, I would go to a Metal concert. But anyways.... if you go, you have to try the Langostinos (prawns) and the Mejillones (mussels). Super delish!!

The food here is AMAZING! If you wan't to have authentic, fresh seafood Mexican style, then this is your spot. However, there are a few things they need to work on. My main issue is the service. The waitresses are nice, but slow, and not too efficient. More than a few times I've gone and noticed they were VERY understaffed. Another issue is the music. It's live so it's way too loud. You can't even have a conversation with the person sitting next to you. Some people tend to spend hours in that place, get trashed, and play for like 5 hours of music. Overall, the food is great, and very affordable compared to other seafood restaurants. But the overall atmosphere isn't the greatest. I love the food, and will definitely continue to go. I'll just continue to lecture each waitress until they get it together:)

This was by far the worst location of all the Isla Marias Restaurants across Chicago! We arrived in the early afternoon on the weekend and before we walked through the door, we couldn't even hear ourselves speak because of the ridiculously loud and obnoxious music that was playing, so against my better judgment I agreed to sit outside. I tried the food at 2 other Chicago locations and well it was good enough to make me agree to stop in at what turned out to be this garbage can on the side of the road disguised as a restaurant. As for the service, it was verrrrry slow and our waiter did not check in with us after taking our orders. When I asked the waiter (who appeared to understand English initially), to describe the drink I was pointing to on the menu, he explained it was a new drink with grenadine and vodka. Ok, I said, I think I'll try that. After another long wait, our meals came to our table outside where the flies and bugs circled anxiously waiting to land on our food! EWW EWW! Dining alfresco is usually a pleasant experience when it's at a clean and well maintained establishment unlike this latrin disguised as a restaurant. My partner and I were hungry and we were sooooo not expecting such horrible service and atmosphere. So when I realized I got the wrong dish, I politely brought it up to our waiter both in Englsh and Spanish, he argued with me about hearing me order something totally different. I was disgusted at this point because not only did he screw up my drink by bringing me a pink shake in a cocktail glass rather than the frozen drink he described as grendine and vodka but he refused to apologize for screwing up my food order as well. This my friends was a waiter who did give a crap about getting a tip!!! You don't argue with a customer PERIOD! My entire order was screwed up and even after both my partner and I told him there were numerous problems, he gave that played out look as if he didn't understand English and ignored us. We paid the check and guess who didn't get a tip. Also, BEWARE if you're there for take out because the take out menu we were told by the zombie waiter is the "old won" because the already overpriced menu is at least $2 to $3 off from their dine in menu. So if you decide to sit and eat the mush they call seafood, then be prepared to pay a little more because that's how they run things at Isla Marias on North Avenue. This place gets 0 stars as far as I'm concerned but had to select at least one because Yelp doesn't have a zero/loser rating yet!

I want to give this nasty ass place less than one star. This place should be closed down and wonder why a lot of people flock here. We came here one time and walked out right when we got are food. Are appetizer was bad the empanadas had hair stuffed in no lie strands of hair every where. We told our waitress and she didn't believe it. I told her does it look like I have blonde/orange peroxide colored hair. HELL NAW. She goes ok ok senorita. I go yeah. Then came our food cold raw meat again with the hair. My mother got the burritto I got enchiladas and that shit was horrible. We went up to the register spoke with the woman she wanted us to pay for half. I go no I refuse that food is cold and hair growing out of it, would you like me to call Stone Park Police. She then said let me call my boss I go you do that. The boss said ok let them go. This place is HORRIBLE never ever ever will I return for a hairy meal. This is one bussiness that needs to close down.

Went here for my 2nd yr anniversary on a Tuesday night. We walked in and sat down where ever we wanted to (because no one bothered to greet us upon walking in). We sat down & were given our menus (which were a tad bit overwhelming & confusing). We were then given a complimentary basket of toastadas, with some Ceviche & green salsa. The Ceviche had a very overpowering onion taste to it (so strong it was un-edible to me) and the green salsa had no flavor (it just tasted like very spicy lime juice). I ordered Sangria (thinking it would be an alcoholic Sangria) but nope, it was a non-alcoholic bottle of Sangria, which was not my cup of tea. Next we finally ordered: The queso fundido w/shrimp, as an appetizer. Yuck!! Horrible! It was just a greasy microwaved/burnt mess of cheese, the only thing that saved it from being kinda okay, was the shrimp. Not the best shrimp, but so far the only thing that I thought was edible. Now time for our dinners: We both had the mixed grilled fajitas plate, which came with steak, chicken & shrimp. Ughhhh, the steak was so tough I could barely rip it with my teeth. The chicken was okay, but the pieces were very small about the size of quarters, (I have never encountered chicken like that ever in fajitas before) and the shrimp were about the only thing next to the chicken, that was edible. Rice was blah, beans were blah. Moral of the story...We should of went to El Barco!

Shrimp empanadas and shrimp quesadilla are my go to!!! Perfect amount of shrimp in the quesadilla. When I imagine authentic Mexican food, this is what I think of! If you order the ceviche, Islas gives you a whole bag of tostada's! Great price for the amount of food. So good every time! My mouth is watering thinking about it.

Worst service we have received. Upon arrival we were not greeted, we sat ourselves. We received our menu and our waitress didn't come back to take our ordered I had to go by the bar and get her attention. That should have been our queue to just leave. Our food was not good at all it was very oily we've had this dish several times at the Villa Park location and never had a problem. After the food was brought to us our waiter again was lost and never returned and the crazy part is that they weren't busy, I finally asked another waiter to have my waiter bring me the check for us to leave. I will never visit this location again.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
